新西兰的蛋鸡养殖业相对于这个国家的人口总数而言，还是非常发达的，鸡蛋供应做到了自给自足。[新西兰主要饲养的蛋鸡是“Brown Shaver”](https://www.kannz.com/brown-shavers-hen/)这个品种，相对于其它品种而言，这种蛋鸡体型较小节省养殖空间，下蛋/饲料比例高，喂养容易。

蛋鸡，从刚刚孵化到开始能够下蛋，通常需要18周的时间，在32周左右，蛋鸡达到一生中产蛋效率的最高峰，每周能产6-8枚鸡蛋，并且这种产蛋能力可以持续65-68周左右；从68周后，蛋鸡开始“下坡路”，直到80周左右饲料/产蛋比就不划算了；这时候，蛋鸡很可能被宰杀，变成“老鸡”销往市场（比普通的肉鸡便宜得多）。

在从小鸡向产蛋高峰期的饲养过程中，新西兰的蛋鸡需要 100-105 克每天、每只的饲料量，到达产蛋高峰时期，需要大约120-140克左右的每只、每日消耗量。

如果一个养蛋鸡的农场，有一万只存栏的鸡，那么每天的平均日消耗量就是一吨饲料左右。
