岛屿湾是新西兰旅游热度最高的地点之一，它的名称是 Bay of Islands，由于距离新西兰最大的城市奥克兰只有三个小时多的车程，这里每逢旅游旺季都有大量的游客前往。岛屿湾之所以得其名是因为这里有大大小小许多岛屿如同珍珠一样散落在太平洋上，Bay of Islands 恰如其名；绝大部分新西兰居住的华人都知道“岛屿湾”“岛屿湾”的，但是恐怕没几个人能够马上说出来岛屿湾到底有多少个岛吧？答案是，**岛屿湾由 144 个岛屿组成**。

虽然岛屿湾的大小岛屿上气候和地质都适合人类生存，但实际上大部分岛屿上都没有人类常住；部分岛屿归属毛利部落、部分岛屿归属私人领地，还有部分岛屿原本是私人土地但被转赠新西兰政府。
