# 有趣的英语俗语 stay mum

如果不允许查字典，就纯猜，你觉得字面意义上 stay mum 大概说的是什么呢？难道说是永远待在妈妈身边的妈宝吗？还是说大门不出二门不迈的全职妈妈？

都不是。

stay mum 的意思是，保持沉默，谁也不告诉。

比如说，She is keeping mum about her feelings on the matter. 她对此事的感受保持沉默。

这个词的词源还是蛮古老的，来自于“Mum’s the word”这个说法，其实这句的意思也是保持沉默或安静。 Mum是一个中古英语单词，来自于将近一千年前的叙事诗，为 momme 单词的变体，意思是“沉默”“不要透露”，类似的英语单词“ mime ”（古英语“mīma”，拉丁语“mimus”），意思是沉默的演员或模仿者。
